Jewish Genealogy Research Essentials: Presentations and Workshop.

Learn about the vast array of resources that can help you begin or continue your genealogical journey. The program includes two presentations by Nancy Adelson, plus research assistance, FREE ANCESTRY.COM access for one day, and DOOR PRIZES.

1:30 - 2:30 PM: Getting Started! Learn about the vast array of resources that can help you begin or continue your genealogical journey. Get tips about:

Choosing family tree software, organizing and gathering information for your family tree.
Creating simple research logs, acquiring basic interviewing techniques.
Learning fundamental Ashkenazi & Sephardic naming traditions.
Locating valuable information in old newspapers, and using the National Archives & Records Administration (NARA) resources. These include U.S. Census records, naturalization papers, city directories, and a huge online collection.

3:00 – 4:00 PM: Researching on the Internet! Get an introduction to Internet research:

Using JewishGen’s Family Finder (JGFF), databases, and Family Tree of the Jewish People (FTJP).
Discovering vital records (birth, marriage, and death records) from various sources
Finding living descendants using the Internet.
Employing cemetery research, including JewishGen Online Worldwide Burial Registry (JOWBR).
Sharing your research.
Using free resources in local libraries, including city directories and their free online databases (including Ancestry Library Edition®, HeritageQuest™, ProQuest®), and historical newspapers).

All Day: Access to extensive library materials and assistance by JGSWS board members.

About Our Speaker
Nancy Adelson is a JGSWS founding member, President & Program Chair, GerSIG Director, 2013 IAJGS Conference Program Co-Chair, and IAJGS International Jewish Genealogy Month Committee Chair. She has researched 3700+ members for her husband’s family (Sephardic) and her family (Eastern & Western European) going back to the early 1700s. She has presented at numerous international IAJGS conferences, local events, and on cruise lines. She has received the IAJGS Salutes award, the Washington State Genealogical Society Award for Outstanding Efforts in Preservation, and the JGSWS Outstanding Community Service Award.
